Pre-requisites:
1.
Air up your tires (low tires will cause flat spots in your rims)
2.
Tighten up your parts (stem, wheels, etc)
3.
Wear gloves (prevent blisters)
Basics:
1.
Start with slow to moderate speed
2.
Choose a jumping point or obstacle to hop
3.
Stand and crouch with pedals flat and your knees bent
4.
Pick your front wheel up first
5.
As your front wheel clears the jump point shift your weight
6.
Twist your wrists forward as you push the rear wheel up
7.
Suck your bike up to your chest
8.
Clear the jump point and prepare to land
9.
Absorb impact with your knees
10.
Land smooth and roll away
Now that you have the basics, the best way to improve your
skills is to practice. You can practice almost anywhere from your garage to the
street. Choose smaller obstacles at first like cans and curbs and then work your
way up to benches, ledges and gaps.
Bunnyhopping can definitely improve your riding and jumping
skills. Once you get the bunnyhop down and you move onto jumping, you can
practice tricks on flat ground before trying them over the doubles. Technical
tricks like barspins, turndowns and tailwhips can be learned by first practicing
with the bunnyhop.
Make sure your bike is dialed in for bunnyhops and jumping
by using quality parts. Double wall rims, sturdy bars and stems as well as a
gusseted frame will help your bike endure the punishment of harsh landings. To
