Depending on where you are in your biking life, you have most probably come across obstacles, curbs or logs in your path and on the trail. Your ability to bunny hop these obstacles can increase your speed and add big time to your lead on the competition.

Bunnyhopping skills are fun too. You can impress your friends by jumping up on obstacles like benches, with waist high hops, and launches over gaps. Before you get too carried away though, it’s important to learn some basics.

Launch in external player

Pre-requisites:

1.       Air up your tires (low tires will cause flat spots in your rims)

2.       Tighten up your parts (stem, wheels, etc)

3.       Wear gloves (prevent blisters)

Basics:

1.       Start with slow to moderate speed

2.       Choose a jumping point or obstacle to hop

3.       Stand and crouch with pedals flat and your knees bent

4.       Pick your front wheel up first

5.       As your front wheel clears the jump point shift your weight

6.       Twist your wrists forward as you push the rear wheel up

7.       Suck your bike up to your chest

8.       Clear the jump point and prepare to land

9.       Absorb impact with your knees

10.   Land smooth and roll away

Now that you have the basics, the best way to improve your skills is to practice. You can practice almost anywhere from your garage to the street. Choose smaller obstacles at first like cans and curbs and then work your way up to benches, ledges and gaps.

Bunnyhopping can definitely improve your riding and jumping skills. Once you get the bunnyhop down and you move onto jumping, you can practice tricks on flat ground before trying them over the doubles. Technical tricks like barspins, turndowns and tailwhips can be learned by first practicing with the bunnyhop.

Make sure your bike is dialed in for bunnyhops and jumping by using quality parts. Double wall rims, sturdy bars and stems as well as a gusseted frame will help your bike endure the punishment of harsh landings. To check out reviews on quality parts visit
